Boats get left behind for a number of reasons and they can be a huge environmental hazard (think: lead ballasts, gasoline tanks, and overall shoreline pollution) not to mention they are an eyesore on our beautiful coastline. It’s quite a task to tackle, and while we have some help from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Charleston Harbor Police, and many others, getting the boats out of the water and onto dry land is difficult, and the effort doesn’t stop there.

Demolition is labor intensive and we accept all the help we can find!  Gas, oil, and sewage have to be removed from all of the vessels before being sent to the landfill. During the summer and fall of 2019, we sent over 30 boats to the Bees Ferry Landfill.  We sent them there in dumpsters, car haulers, and boat trailers.  To date, there have been 198 abandoned boats removed, 73 dumpsters filled, 276 tires removed and 2,816 crab traps retrieved.

This is a continuing effort and we will not be the principal group involved, but, will provide our full support to all of the organizations working on this problem.

WARNING!!!

You can NOT salvage what you think is an abandoned boat. It is a felony theft to remove items from these boats. It is also trespassing to be on someone else’s property and/or inside their dwelling without permission.

While you may not see anyone or anything nearby, most U.S. coastal waters are monitored 24/7 by drones with high resolution cameras.
