Sandy Hook, New Jersey – National Park System

In one of our National Parks’ most beautiful coastal areas, we held a cleanup in conjunction with Party City Holdings, Inc. (PCHI) and their holding companies. PCHI’s CEO Jim Harrison participated and was caught on camera doing manual labor helping volunteers out in the tidal marsh on the bay side of this park. A big thanks to Jim and his team of enthusiastic volunteers along with all of the Park Service rangers and service employees who showed up for this event.

We removed a lot of treated wood, plastics, styrofoam, and misc. trash from this area. Unfortunately, we did find a number of dead birds in this critical East Coast wildlife area. Four of the dead gulls were examined by Ranger Steve Schiffer and Rudy Socha for obvious signs of cause of death. The birds were in an advanced state of decomposition and obvious exterior causes of death such as fishing line entanglements were not present.

The burlap bags used to collect trash on this cleanup were donated to the park system for future reuse.
