Wounded Nature-Working Veterans Make It Look Easy on James Island, SC

With the help of a small group of volunteers, Wounded Nature-Working Veterans successfully removed two boats from Clark Sound in James Island, South Carolina on Saturday, December 4, 2021.

There was an old skiff and old runabout that had been in the water here in the marsh for at least twenty years. The homeowner reached out over the summer to SCDHEC who asked us to formulate a plan to get these boats out.

The boats were removed at no cost to the homeowner, who first noticed the shipwrecks years ago. The boats were collecting garbage washed ashore and polluting the waters with toxic materials contained in the wrecks.

Almost all the boats we deal with are made of fiberglass, treated wood, and the foam that floats the boat; and all of that stuff breaks down. All of these hazardous materials can end up in the environment and threaten local wildlife, fish, and human populations.

This accomplishment marks 114 boats removed in the past three years. We’ve been getting it done and 2021 has been a very big year for us. We do this year-round and even COVID didn’t slow us down. With all that we are achieving, we need Support; mostly financial support and we’re actively looking for a used 4×4 truck to expand our operations.

Please help Support our mission to make a real environmental difference and return our critical coastal waterways and tidal marshes to their original, pristine, condition.
